Synopsis
The film tells the story of a singer who unexpectedly dies while traveling in Japan, but her spirit survives and she embarks on a journey to find humanity in the afterlife. The Singapore premiere, which is also the premiere of a Southeast Asian film, will be presented in conjunction with the 40th French Film Festival vOilah! Spirit World is a multi-layered film that at its core is about two very human impulses.
One, the creative instinct that drives artists, and the second, the emotional need for family connections
At the very beginning of the film, we are introduced to three characters who have lost touch with these two defining impulses. Singer-songwriter Claire (Deneuve), Yuzo (Sakai) – a former songwriter turned piano tuner – and her son Hayato (Takenouchi), an anime director whose acknowledged best work is now behind him. These three characters need to make decisions and take action in death and the afterlife to find a solution to the unresolved problems of life.
Spirit World answers this question in a very realistic and pragmatic way
This is, of course, a highly idealized perspective on this universal question: what happens after we die? Rejecting the fear of the unknown and choosing to help the living is a selfless quest that leads our characters to fulfill their humble desires. This is the refreshing message of Spirit World: creative impulses can bear fruit in healing family bonds when used selflessly.
Technically, Spirit World ticks all the boxes for audience engagement
The friendly performances are engaging, the stunning landscapes of Takasaki and Chiba (and the seascapes) are a pure feast for the eyes, and the homage to the musical artists of the 60s and 70s is a golden age of creativity that will never be forgotten. . A sweet and heartfelt cinematic experience for anyone who has felt the pull of creativity and the love of family.
