A new animated film has sneaked into theaters called HITPIG!. Based on a children’s book called Pete and Pickles by Berkeley Breathed, it’s the story of Hitpig (Jason Sudeikis), a pig bounty hunter who returns escaped animals to their owners. The title doesn’t make sense right away, the pig doesn’t kill anyone as a hitman. It should probably be called something like PETE THE BOUNTY HUNTER or just PETE AND PICKLES. His name is literally Hitpig. Moving on, he meets Pickles (Lily Singh), the elephant who escaped from the vilely arrogant Lepin’ Lord of the Leotard (Rainn Wilson). They form a bond that makes Hitpig question his career and life. This movie is good. I get that it wasn’t made with me in mind. The humor is all over the place, sometimes aimed lower for kids, sometimes aimed a little higher. Lots of back jokes. The story moves at a mile a minute, sometimes literally, it doesn’t let you breathe. All the characters talk fast, though I enjoyed hearing Hannah Gadsby as a cheeky koala. The movie seems low budget and I’m really surprised it made it to theaters. There are a few good enough scenes for your chosen family. HIT! I suppose it’s a great movie, but it’s immediately forgettable and not worth spending money on unless you have a toddler with ADHD who loves loud noises and bright colors.
